Studying in the USA

The USA consists of 50 states under its jurisdiction,
Washing, DC, five autonomous territories, and the
Commonwealth of the Outer Islands. Washington
is the capital of the USA, located in the Mid-Atlantic
region on the east coast. However, due to the vast
territory and complicated terrain, climatic varies
largely with roughly five climatic zones.

The USA is a very diversified country, offering
students different options. Hong Kong students
may apply for progression to "University Pathway"
upon high school completion, or "US two-year
community college" with 120 credits, then a
Bachelor's degree will be awarded.

Education Background

There are more than 4,000 schools that
welcome international students, offering
over t00 different disciplines. The USA
has over 750,000 international students
and ranks first in the world.

Eight of the world's top ten universities
are from the USA in the 2013 and 2014
annual World University Rankings done by
Times Higher Education. 76 universities in
the USA are ranked the top 200: notable
universities, include Harvard and Yale,
as well as other Ivy League affiliations
such as Stanford University and MIT.

Primary and Secondary Schools

There are public and private and secondary
schools only accept short-term international
exchange stdents (at most a year), while
private secondary schools are allowed to
enroll international students. Upon completing
3 years of junior high school (Grade 5-8), and

3 years of high school (Grade 9-12) curriculum,
students can choose to go to different universities
according to their preference and ability. Academic
year begins every September, and again, some
schools have a January intake.

University

States universities and private universities offer
usually a four-year bachelor's degree. Students
may choose to attend either a four-year univeristy
or a two-year community college, associate degree,
before joining the third year of college. In the
first two years of four-year university courses,
different subjects are generally taught, allowing
students to switch to other major subjects before
the third year of college, which is relatively more
flexible.

University Preparatory Course /
University Diploma / International
University Year Class

University preparatory classes are designed for
international students, ranging for six months
to a year, to go directly into the first year of
college. To obtain the most robust short-term
degree courses, elective subjects include
engineering, law, science, arts, computer
science, commerce, media and design and more.

The second phase of the University Pathway is
designed for overseas students, ranging for
six months to a year, to go straight into the
second year of college. This is the fastest way
to be awarded a degree.
